Chad Arnow maintains an active schedule as a performer on trombone, bass trombone, and euphonium and as a teacher of middle school, high school, and college low brass students. He has served as the bass trombonist of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra since 2000. As a substitute and extra musician, he has performed on numerous occasions with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra since 1998; he can be heard on five of their recordings. He has also performed with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. In the course of his career, he has performed with such names as Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Kathleen Battle, Keith Lockhart, Krzystof Penderecki, and many others.
An avid chamber musician, he is a member of the Elysian Trombone Consort, the Carillon Brass, the Dayton Philharmonic Brass Quintet, and the University of Dayton Faculty Brass Quintet. He has also played with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet and many other small ensembles.
Equally at home playing classical and more commercial/popular music, Chad has done over a hundred performances of touring Broadway shows, including Wicked, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, A Chorus Line, and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. He has shared the stage with pop artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Art Garfunkel, Manhattan Transfer, the Pointer Sisters, Burt Bacharach, and many others.
Chad joined the faculty of the University of Dayton (UD) in 2014 after serving for many years as the Trombone and Tuba Instructor at Xavier University and as the Low Brass Instructor at Mt. St. Joseph University. At UD, he teaches trombone, coaches brass chamber music, coordinates the Brass Area, and coordinates admissions for the Music Department. Chad received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in Trombone Performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). He has studied with Tony Chipurn (retired principal trombonist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra) Peter Norton (bass trombonist of the CSO and former principal trombonist of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra) and Timothy J. Northcut (CCM's Professor of Music-Tuba and Euphonium). He has been coached in masterclasses by Arnold Jacobs and John Lofton, among others.
